La hora chapina

There is definitely one thing in Guatemala to which I never will or want to become accustomed: la hora chapina.

“La hora chapina” is the little phrase people use here to laugh off the fact that nothing starts on time. But I don’t think it’s funny. Being the Type-A American that I am, I find it maddeningly frustrating that people routinely do not show up for meetings for at least an hour after their scheduled start times. There is no excuse or apology when a person strolls in an hour and a half late—she just takes her seat and joins in on the meeting (that is if enough people had arrived by that time to actually start it). My exasperated countenance occasionally elicits the aforementioned irking expression, “Es la hora chapina, Seño,” but there is no compunction in the phrase—it is only the person’s way of dispelling any culpability in her tardiness.

A couple of weeks ago following a meeting with members of the European Union in which the last member of the board of my association didn’t show up until a full two hours after 8:00 am (saying that a meeting will start that early here is really just a joke), I delivered a stern speech on punctuality to the board of directors. The women intently listened and nodded as I went on and on about how punctuality is a sign of respect for other people and a reflection on how our association does business. I even translated the saying, “To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late. To be late is to be left,” into Spanish to get across the American mentality about time. After the lecture, the women seemed genuinely excited to turn over a new leaf, singing the praises of “puntualidad” and “la hora americana”. The next morning one women arrived 45 minutes late to leave for a meeting in Cobán and two didn’t show up at all.

This lax concept of time is by no means exclusive to my women’s group (as any Peace Corps volunteer would tell you), but is just the way of life here. Everyone has the mindset that there is no point in showing up on time because no one else will be on time and therefore nothing starts on time. This culturally ingrained habit isn’t going to change just because the anal gringa has anxiety if she is not at least 10 minutes early for a meeting. And even though I know this post already reeks of ethnocentrism, I can’t help but say that the way things operate here is just a horrible waste of time. Meetings in which everything could be accomplished within an hour end up taking half a day waiting for everyone to arrive (unprepared). So I am going to keep on lecturing on punctuality. Maybe by the end of my two years I’ll be able to deliver the speech in Poqomchi’.

Kate - i'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. I find “la hora chapin” comforting and it is actually one of my favorite aspects of the Guatemalan culture. I was always so stressed out in the US trying to be on time. Here i arrive when i can and if i'm 10 minutes or a half an hour late nobody cares, i'm not written up, i'm not a bad person... I think you just need to relax a little and if you insist on always being on time… bring a book :).

This is an intersting post for sure - as a mexican, I live by la hora chapin. In fact, I've had to retrain myself to be on time as my profession doesn't tolerate tardiness. However, you should note that culturally, Latinos will prioritize other commitments, such as family, over work or business. If your child is sick, you had to prepare a meal, or someone needed you, your 8:00 a.m. just got slammed to the back burner. Don't take it personally, its just that priorities in other cultures are often at odds with a business centered American notion of "time." (ethnic minorities in the U.S. often refer to this anomoly as "Colored Peoples' Time" usually abbreviated CPT)
One more point - you say that to be on time is a sign of respect. This is true, but only in cultures who operate under the same "signage" -- therefore, while you may attempt to transpose a cultural signifier from one culture to another, I suggest you take Kelly's advice and just bring a book to pass the time! Or better yet, just start scheduling meetings 2 hours before they really start
:-)

Thank you for your comment anonymous. I am fully aware that I am projecting my American monochronic concept of time on a polychronic culture, but it is exactly this strict adherence to time that I want the women in my association to understand. One of my main goals here is to find sustainable markets for their products in the States—working with people that regard deadlines and time with the same exactitude I do. Yes, the tardiness is frustrating for me personally, but the goal of a lot of my harping about punctuality is to train the women with whom I work to be on time for a meeting in the hopes that later things like fulfilling an order from a client by a certain deadline won’t be so daunting (or impossible).

And I do have a little fun with the women on the subject. Our next board meeting is scheduled for 6:00 am…and the Prensa Libre (my preferred waiting reading material) will keep me entertained until we start at 10:)

For your reading pleasure about timekeeping around the world, check this article out from the BBC: La Hora Peruana

Hits the nail on the head.
BTW - I am "anonymous" of your last post - my google account wasn't loading from my remote location. I love reading your blog - you should consider publishing for a travel website or book on Guatemala.

Hi, I know it's a bit late, and there seems to be a ton of spam comments, but I just stumbled across this post.
I am Guatemalan and I am actually against the 'la hora chapina' system. It is true what someone said about family being the top priority in our culture, but still, unless there is an emergency or some sort of unexpected setback, one can always be on time. Granted, I'm in the minority, but it really annoys me, specially when you can't afford to leave an hour or a couple of hours of "after-time" to make up for those arriving late. Interestingly though, I have observed that this phenomenon only occurs when you want to get together many people, 10 or so. In that case, as one of your readers said, the best option is to schedule the meeting at least an hour early. In any case, I always carry a book or a sketchbook with me, so the time waiting can be put to good use.

Hi kgriffin, I'm from Guatemala, I know what you are talking about, when I studied at the University I always got frustated about it.. :)
