We got our site assignments Wednesday!! I am going to be living in a small town about 30 km south of Cobán in Alta Verapaz working with the Asociación de Artesanas Textiles Nu’Kem del Área Poqomchi’. They are a group of indigenous Poqomchi’ speaking women making a variety of products out of traditional cloth.
I am leaving next Tuesday to go out and visit the site for the week and meet the women. After that I should have some more details about the project and the town. I am really excited about my placement, and I can’t wait to finish up training and get to work out there!!

Hey! This is on my birthday woohoo! Anyways I hope everything works out with your first assignment. Were you nervous about your first one? I would, your step sister (wow that is kind of wierd saying that about my teacher....) said that her husband was going to visit you and send you some of our projects....I might want to buy one of those "products" that you said on this post so if your intrested then I guess respond :P
Sincerly,
Jon Kendrick
Jon,
I wasn't so much nervous, but more excited about finding out my site. During the first months of training the APCDs (my first in line Guatemalan boss here) do interviews with us to find out our strengths, work history, likes, and dislikes in order to choose a project and site that best suits us. I got a perfect placement and I absolutely love my job. And this will actually be my only assignment. I will be here in Tactic working with Nu'Kem for my whole time in Guatemala.
I think it would be great if you want to buy something from Nu'Kem. Most of their products are geared toward women--maybe you could buy something for your mom:)--but we did just start making some good looking scarves for guys.
Hey again! Ok I want to say first that I was surprised you responded. I showed my joy by jumping around and causing a ruckus in the classroom..... anyways the scarf was thought as a gift for a female friend of mine....if you get the flow...and thanks I found out that Mrs.Griffin has a bunch of them with her now and I might just get one from her but I am curious about the ones for guys.
Ya, I would buy one. You should think about turning a profit when you come back to the States. Handmade, genuine Guatemalan scarves for sale!
Jon,
There is a picture of a guy scarf on my Flickr site which you can reach by clicking on the picture graphic on the right side of my blog. The scarf is solid black with a gray, white and blue strip on one side. They can be made with any color combination with 1, 2, or 3 stripes on the side. They are also longer for guys.
